History of SoHo

Once an industrial district, SoHo has been reinvented over the years as a centre for art and architecture. SoHo was nearly demolished in the 1960s, but preservationists were able to save the 19th century cast-iron buildings, and Greene Street has the best example of this type of architecture in the United States. Once this district of New York was saved from the wrecking ball, the artists moved in. Chic, renovated lofts with spectacular views of the Hudson River were scooped up for affordable prices. Art galleries, designer boutiques, international restaurants and cafes opened their doors to a throng of hipsters and culturally elite, and Sunday brunch and gallery hopping became the favourite pastime of the SoHo crowd. Today, many artists have been priced out of SoHo, but the district still maintains its unique legacy and cultural character.

Tribeca Film Festival
